How to Thrive as a Multi-Passionate: Mastering the Art of Juggling Multiple Interests

Updated: Oct 11, 2024

Does the question 'Where do you see yourself in five years?' make you cringe? Or even worse, do you still dread hearing 'What do you want to be when you grow up?'—as an adult?

If so, you might just be multi-passionate—or, as Emilie Wapnick puts it, a person with many interests and creative pursuits

Sounds exciting, right? Having many passions and interests, just waiting to be explored. But let’s be honest—it can feel a bit like riding a blindfolded ostrich—fun, but slightly terrifying. And don’t forget about the guilt of starting yet another project, the constant state of confusion, overthinking, and the epic quest to find balance.

But here’s the thing: what if, instead of trying to tame your wild creative side, you embraced it? Could you actually thrive as a multi-passionate and achieve success? (Spoiler alert: yes, you can.)

Hey, you were born multi-passionate for a reason. Imagine how much less colourful the world would be if people like Steve Jobs or Richard Branson decided to play it safe and ignored their ability to connect innovative ideas to real-world challenges.

As a multi-passionate, you're not just indulging whims—you’re a knowledge-seeker, a creative think tank, and a master idea juggler.

And the best part? You’re not afraid to try something new. That is what fuels your curiosity and turns those scattered interests into the very spark that drives innovation.

So go ahead, embrace all those passions - after all, the world needs more colorful thinkers like you!

Prioritise without losing yourself

Hmmm… you’ve probably heard this a 1000 times before, but if you want to spend your time being productive instead of feeling anxious and unclear of your next move - you’ve got to set goals.

Ok, so you have this great new idea that you’re dying to try; your midway through a project you’ve been working on for the past 3 months, and you still have a live a somewhat socially acceptable life in between.

So how do you balance it all?

Here’s my list of tested tips to help you balance your projects and achieve success:

  • Organisation:

Being organised is key for keeping track of multiple ideas, projects and interests. Seeing everything laid out clearly makes it easier to prioritize tasks and reduce mental clutter. The structure will allow you to navigate and switch between interests without losing momentum.

Try online tools like Notion or if you prefer putting pen to paper, bullet journaling does wonders!

  • Time-blocking:

Feel like there’s never enough time to pursue all your interests? By dedicating blocks of time to each activity, you can balance interests and activities.

Try the Pomodoro technique - check out Pomodoro apps on your mobile app store.

  • Discipline: With many passions pulling you in different different directions, it’s easy to lose focus. The key to achieving success is consistency. Develop routines and stick to them - This will help you stay focused and allow you to progress across multiple interests without burnout.

Try apps like Habitica or Forest

  • Reward-system:

Celebrate small wins. Rewards not only keeps motivation high but reinforces positive habits. Having these small injections of motivation will help you stay excited about pursuing and completing your projects.

    Bullet journaling is a must-try!

  • Self-care:

You’re hardwired to push yourself too hard trying to do everything. Take time to rest, relax, and recharge. Preventing burnout gives your mind and body the chance to refuel with fresh creative energy.

Try scheduled downtime - Yes! Use time-blocking to schedule regular self-care sessions.

  • Rebounding:

You’re bound to face challenges and setbacks. Multi-passionates need resilience to bounce back quickly. Stay flexible to adapt and remind yourself that failure is part of the creative process.

Join communities of like-minded people to share experiences and get encouragement and touch base with your mentor regularly, if you have one.

To wrap up...

Keep doing your thing.. or in your case, your many things. You have a unique ability and while it may come with some challenges, it also makes you the interesting, intelligent, vibrant person you are.

Embrace your distinction and enjoy your journey - remember to remain open to change and flexible to learn from your experiences.

Stay focused by taking intentional steps toward your version of success.

If anyone tries to tell you, you can’t do it all - smile, thank them for their opinion and then go ahead and prove them wrong.
